Have You Eaten Your Mac and Cheese Today?

Okay Canadians, we have a new title.

Apparently, Canadians eat more macaroni and cheese than any other country in the world, AND boxed 'Kraft Dinner' is the most purchased grocery item in the country!

Let's talk about the dish at hand, macaroni and cheese.  Pasta and cheese casseroles date back as far as 14th century Italy, but British immigrants brought the recipe to Canada.  The recipe first appears in Canada in the cookbook Modern Practical Cookery, in 1845!

But how did we go from fresh pasta baked in cream sauces to boxed, nearly instant variations?

In 1937, the Kraft Company marketed a new product called Kraft Dinner, using the slogan "make a meal for four in nine minutes".  The low cost made it instantly popular as Canadians struggled through the Great Depression, and gained even more popularity during World War Two when rationing allowed the purchase of two boxes for a single food rationing stamp.  While Kraft is no longer the only maker of boxed macaroni and cheese, it is still one of the most popular!

So whether you add meat, veggies, or just leave it like it is, go make some mac 'n' cheese and take pride in making Canada the largest consumer of macaroni and cheese in the world!
