Cultural Background: Haida, British Columbia
I’m a Haida graphic artist and have been creating Haida art since 2012. At that time, I decided I needed to change the direction of my life. This is when I started learning about my family from Haida Gwaii. I researched Haida art and learned the basic forms. Then I started playing with designs and developed my own style. That style has evolved and continues to evolve the more I create new work. I have tried to stay true to the traditional Haida style and have for the most part, but I feel that to grow as an artist I must be open to change. As I continue on my new path, I try new things and learn more about tradition and this is reflected in my work. I’m mainly a self taught artist but I was also taught for a short time by George Hunt Jr. at S J Willis Secondary back in the early 1980’s. I hope you enjoy my designs and follow my journey of discovery in the world of Haida art.

Cultural Background: Ojibway – Christian Island, southern Georgian Bay, Ontario
The self-taught Beausoleil First Nation artist, William Anthony Monague, grew up on an isolated island with no access to formal education or training in the arts. Monague – “Abwaudung” (The Visionary or Dreamer) discovered inspiration in the traditional teachings of Mother Earth, Spirit World and in the beauty of nature and in the Georgian Bay shores that surrounded him. Initially he was using the woodland style but soon developed his own more contemporary style of art. During the 1970’s and 80’s Monague followed the Pow Wow circuit in a van with his family down to Mexico. His work ended up in various museums and galleries along the way. Monague donates his time and artwork to many worthwhile causes, while helping others. “I feel my art speaks to my culture. I have made a name for myself with my work and reputation but it has taken a long time.” After 45 years of painting, he continues his artistic lifelong journey with his family.
“Sharing Anishnabek Culture through the Spirit of Color”
His Art Studio is located in his century old family home in downtown Midland, Ontario and not too far from the shores of Georgian Bay.

Cultural Background: Cree
Betty Albert-Licenz was adopted and raised by French Canadian parents in Northern Ontario. She spent time on Vancouver Island where both of her interests in art and spirituality surfaced. During the next twenty years, she worked with pen and ink, and improved her artistic techniques.
Circumstances eventually brought her back to her Native American father, discovering her birthright as a Cree. Betty then began an art business with her father called “Wabimeguil Art Studio,” which distributes art throughout North America. Like many Cree people, dreams play an important part of her life and her work. She discovered that her dream people were faceless and this is evident in some of her work. Her art allows the viewer to experience tradition, action, and a deep spirituality. Her use of vibrant acrylic colors begs us to view creation in a new way. Through her painting, “Wabimeguil (White Feather),” she expresses not only her own growth in spirituality, but also encourages people to experience “The Peace,” that she represents in her art.
