Alert, in Canada's Nunavut Territory, is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. It lies at latitude 82°30'05" north and is only 817 kilometres (508 miles) from the North Pole. The permanent population of Alert consists of only a few military and scientific personnel, however Alert has many temporary visitors from mostly government organizations.
The yearly mean temperature in Alert is −17.7 °C. Snowfall can occur at any time of the year. Only the months of July and August average above freezing temperatures.
