The Great Maple Syrup Heist!
Yes, you read that right. In 2011 and 2012, 2'700 tons of maple syrup worth $18 million was stolen from a Quebec warehouse. Clever criminals with a sweet tooth for crime drained large barrels and replaced the contents with water, their theft going unnoticed for months. Eventually a routine inventory discovered the switcheroo and investigators began their search for the missing syrup.
Thankfully, two thirds of the syrup was recovered. The sticky-fingered thieves were eventually caught and given hefty fines and prison sentences. We doubt they'll be enjoying pancakes and syrup in prison!
Fun Fact:
If tons and dollars don't mean much to you, the amount of syrup stolen would have provided enough syrup for 183 million pancakes!
