Must-Try Hikes in Ottawa

Feeling overwhelmed by work and longing to spend some time surrounded by beautiful multi-colored trees and the quiet hum of nature?

It’s no secret that there’s a handful of physical and mental health benefits that come from spending time outdoors and getting a light workout in, which is where hiking comes into play. Not only does this activity reduce the risk of heart diseases, lowers your stress levels, and improves your mood, it’s also a fun and budget-friendly way to explore your city!

Living in the Ottawa region means you’re only a quick drive to some of the most scenic hikes in the country.

With the mild weather and stunning views, it’s time to pick up those hiking boots and explore some of our favorite hikes and trails in the Ottawa area.

King Mountain - Gatineau Park

For the experienced hikers looking for a challenge, King’s Mountain offers a short yet demanding hike through lush forests and scenic landscapes.

The 1.9 km trail takes you up a rocky, steep slope to the top of the mountain, where you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view that is well worth the effort of getting to the top. Make sure you are prepared for a strenuous climb by wearing the right gear and keeping refreshments handy.

Luskville Falls - Gatineau Park

Although we’re staying within the same park, Luskville Falls offers a completely different landscape filled with rocky terrains, unique ecosystems, and of course the waterfall.

With a trail length of 4.5 km and a few steep climbs, time will fly by as you take in the variety of wildlife and plant life. During the summer, there’s a hidden cave that you can swim in, although it’s advised to bring a friend along if you’re considering taking a dip into the water.

Mer Bleue Bog

If you want to escape city life but not actually leave the city, Mer Bleu offers the perfect escape. Located east of the city in Orleans, you’ll be met with a 7,770 year old bog with over 20km of paths to explore.

You can have your pick of difficulty levels, although most of the trails are generally considered to be beginner friendly. On your hike you’ll see some incredibly diverse plants and animals that are usually found in the northern landscape.

As the weather cools down and mosquitos lessen, there’s less of a chance that you’ll run into any wildlife, but to be on the safe side, be sure to read the announcement board posted at the beginning of the trail.

Pink Lake

Although the name is deceiving, the views on the Pink Lake Trail are anything but.

This 2.3km loop near Gatineau is a popular destination among locals in the fall, as it features a lookout on to the lake that reflects the beautiful colours of the season. This time of year is the busiest, so it’s best to visit during the weekday to get a more fulfilling experience.

As it’s a fragile ecosystem, there are some rules to follow, including not swimming in the lake, not brining any of your furry friends along, and refraining from using any boats or watercrafts.

Closing Remarks

There’s no better feeling than getting to the top of the mountain and sitting down to have a picnic with an incredible view. Browse our wide variety of tasty edibles that are perfect to pack and bring along for a day out. We’d be happy to help you pick out some delectable bites to make your day out unforgettable, so don’t hesitate to reach out!
